“In my first year of medical school, my passion for traveling the world took me on an organized trip to Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania through a program with the University of Calgary. What started out as a somewhat misguided way to spend a summer turned into a life-long passion. I witnessed extremes of poverty completely contrary to everything I had ever seen in my life, including watching a man operated on while he was wide awake and parents sleeping under their children’s beds in a pediatrics ward. These experiences shaped the way I viewed the world as well as the role I could play in making real change.” – William Cherniak

“There is so much need in a place like Uganda, most people we saw on our outreach mission had no access to health care and no money to pay for tests and medication. Just knowing that we could provide essential health care and medication to an extremely underserviced population was very rewarding. I went into medicine to help people and this was a time when I felt very appreciated by people in tremendous need.” – Eben Stern
